Creating Posts

  1. Begin in your site Dashboard. On the left-hand menu, click on “Posts” and select “Add New”.
  2. Enter the title and content of your post.
  3. Select a category for your post, and add any relevant tags (for more, see below, “Organizing Posts”). If your post is something a prof or TA will grade, double-check your assignment description to see if a particular course tag or category is required.
  4. You may also want to add an eye-catching feature image to your posts to make your site look more attractive. This can be done by clicking “Set Featured Image” at the bottom right corner of this page and uploading a relevant image. Ensure that you follow the copyright guide when you publish your image.
  5. Finally, scroll to the top of the page and click “Publish.”

Organizing Posts

Categories are used to organize your posts into broad, relevant topics, and help your readers to understand and navigate the body of work you are displaying in your portfolio.

A “parent” category is a broad, overarching category, which can have underneath it “child” categories.

To create categories:

  1. Begin in your site Dashboard. On the left-hand menu, hover over to “Posts” and select “Categories.”
  2. If you are using the simple template, there will already be a number of standardized ‘parent’ categories for you to choose from. You can edit or delete these if they aren’t relevant for your ePortfolio.
  3. If you are submitting work in your ePortfolio for a course, choose “Add New Category,” and then type in the name of your course, without spaces. For example, “GEOG379.” Choose “Courses” as the ‘parent’ category. “GEOG379” will then become a ‘child’ category.
  4. Then click “Add New Category” to save your changes.


A Post Category Feed is a useful technique to feature all posts under the same category on a page. This allows readers to easily view all the relevant posts under a specific category. For example, you can have a page titled as GEOG 379 that displays all the posts under “GEOG379” category in a feed.

To create a Post Category Feed:

  1. Hover over to “Appearance” on the left-hand menu, and select “Menus.”
  2. Here on the Edit Menu section page, scroll down and select the “Categories” drop-down menu.
  3. Check off or select your desired category to be displayed as a feed and then click “Add to Menu.”
  4. Once it has been added, you have the option to re-order the position on the menu structure by dragging it.
  • Note: Select the Category menu under a ‘parent’ category and drag it to the right slightly to create a sub-menu item.


Tagging Posts

You can also use tags to add detail to your posts. Tags are a way to connect posts across different categories. You might, for example, separate posts belonging to individual courses using the “Courses” parent category and child categories like “FNIS100,” “ENGL300,” and so on–but then use the tag “academic writing” to connect all your samples of written assignments from all your different courses to each other.

Just as hashtags connect different users on Twitter or Instagram who are discussing the same topic, tags in your ePortfolio create connections across your posts. For your portfolio, though, there’s no #hashtag required.

Your tags will help users who are using your search bar to find content, and will be visible at the bottom of each post.

To tag a post you’ve already made:

  1. Go to your Dashboard, and under “Posts” click on “All Posts”. Then, click on the title of the post to which you want to add a tag.
  2. Scroll down the edit page and look for the “Tags” section on the lower-right.
  3. Add tag words separated by commas. You may also choose from your most used tags.
  4. Click “Add” when you are done and then click “Update” to save.
